Notch crimping: a tried and true solution

Notch crimping is the oldest and probably also the crimping profile that is originally most well-known in electrical engineering. Currently it is used in control cabinet construction up to 1 kV. It is set apart by a deep point-specific deformation of the cable lug. However, it is only suitable for processing copper. The deep point-specific deformation may also be why it has fallen out of favour somewhat with the experts, and is being gradually replaced by the generally established hexagonal crimp. Unfairly, as we have found.

An all-round talent that comes in two versions
In practice, there are two types of notch crimping: traditional notch crimping and double indent crimping. Our notch tools allow crimpings with cross-sections of up to 400 mm². Both versions are effective in equal measure and identical in terms of their properties. All notch crimping involves special crimpings, which are most suitable for fine and superfine stranded conductors, in order to create permanent and secure connections. However, stranded conductors can also be used to create a secure connection.

Notch crimping covers a wide range of conductors: from stranded copper cables of class 2 according to DIN EN 60228 to fine and superfine types of classes 5 and 6. Of course, it must be ensured that the matching cable lug is used. In terms of technology, notch crimping is set apart by its high degree of compaction. Remember that notch crimping generates a high material load, which results from the large force when crimping. It is therefore important that high-quality connecting materials are used and the connection is non-tension. The same number of notches as for a narrow hexagonal crimp is required.
Still applicable
To summarise, notch crimping is a standard and expedient method of crimping – certainly for cross-sections of less than 6 mm², as well as in control cabinet construction up to 1 kV. Do not rule out notch crimping by default when choosing a crimping method – it is always feasible and efficient too.

There is no doubt, however, that the acceptance of notch crimping among experts isn't what it once was. It is therefore important in the case of specific projects to clarify with customers in advance as to whether they allow notch crimping in their technical facilities and plants.
